Light-emitting diode (LED)
  • LED was the first visible spectrum (colored red)
  • It was developed in 1962 by Nick Holonyak Jr
  • He is seen as the "father of the light-emitting diode"

Computers in the 1960's
  1. The Burroughs 205 computer was used at the University of Virginia from 1960-1964. It had very little memory and speed and operated on vacuum tubes. It took 1800 vacuum tubes in the central processing system to operate the Burroughs 205.
  2. The Apollo Guidance computer makes its first orbit around Earth on Apollo 7 in 1968.

America in the 1960's
  1. The Civil Rights Movement became an increasing issue in the 1960's. after the assasination of JFK in 1963, the passing of the Civil Rights legislation in the following year was a bittersweet victory.
  2. Protests of the Vietnam war were happening all over the country, largely on college campuses. One of the most tragic of these protests occured at Kent State University, where the Ohio National Guard opened fire on protesters, killing four students. (May 4, 1970)
  3. ​In March,1961 President Kennedy created the Peace Corps, an organization of volunteers going into other nations to help the poor.
  4. Neil Armstrong becomes the first man to walk on the moon in 1969.
1960's Across the Globe
  1. Throughout the decade, the United States and the Soviet Union were competing in the arms race, the race to create the more powerful, more frightening weapons.
  2. Another issue happened in Cuba on October 22, 1962 when the US discovered the building of offensive weapons by the Soviet Union. President Kennedy immediately quarantined the island and demanded the removal of the weapons.
